According the the Airports Council International and their European list on traffic in the airports, Madrid Barajas is the one which suffered the highest passenger loss during the first three months in 2013.
The tax increase caused some route closures and made some airlines like easyJet decrease traffic.
The economic situation and the Iberia strike have also contributed in this passenger loss.
Hence, the number of passengers has decreased in Madrid by 13.9% to reach 3.2 million in March. When it comes to Barcelona, it has fallen by 2.5% to 2.5 million passengers.
Some airports improve
Palma de Mallorca has gained passengers by 2.5%, Tenerife Sur by 2.8% and Málaga by 0.8%. Lanzarote(2.4%), Alicante (1.9%) and Girona (4.1%) also improved their figures.
Some others have also decreased
Sevilla (-13.7%), Gran Canaria (-2.6%), Fuerteventura (-8.9%) and Bilbao (-9%) also have suffered a passenger loss.
Worse than in the rest of Europe
Spain was the sixth country in passenger decrease with an overall drop by 7.7%. In the contrary, the traffic in Europe has remained steady. The Slovak Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary and Greece had even higher drops than Spain.
March is even worse
As for March, Spain was the forth country in passenger loss only after Estonia, The Slovak Republic and Greece.
Less airplanes
Movements in the European airports have decreased by 5% which clearly shows the European economic situation.
In other news, the non EU industries have kept their “impressive and dynamic increases with an improvement by 8.9%”.
