The Minister of Fomento, Ana Pastor, informed yesterday, in continuation with the press release launched by Aena, that the airlines flying to/from the Canary Islands in the forthcoming winter season will increase the seat availability by 15%. In particular, the number of seats offered on international flights rises as high as 22%.

During her speech in the Senate she said in the Canary Islands “everything goes reasonably well” and the international traffic is growing. The islands will take benefit from the new subsidies to be applicable in all the Spanish Airports as from January 2014.
She said this in reply to a senator—Mr. Quintero Castañeda Narvay— who had said that the Ministry has been refusing these new subsidies for the Canaries in the last two years, applying a discount only to the operations on “valley days”. He wondered why Aena stopped the subsidies in the Canaries in 2012 and is now going to establish them for all the airports.
Castañeda reminded the Canaries had “a record year in 2011 thanks to that bonus” suggesting that change in the tax policies might have something to do with the traffic decrease in Madrid airport.
However, Pastor assured the new subsidies are not only for Madrid, but for the whole net. She also reminded that the new subsidies are added to the others which are already in place for the Canaries and we already explained in this blog.
Although this piece of news says Pastor said the subvention on valley days will continue to be 15%, we believe this is an error and it should read it will continue to be 50% as already explained.
