According to ABC, yesterday the period for presenting offers for the second phase of the renovation of handling licenses in the 19 major airports in the Aena network ended. The companies Iberia, Globalia, Acciona and Menzies are the confirmed participants.
Five of the 19 major airports (Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante-Elche y Palma de Mallorca) expect to have three agents and 15 licenses are up for bid. The other 14 airports (Asturias, Bilbao, Fuerteventura, Girona, Ibiza, Lanzarote, Menorca,Tenerife Sur, Tenerife Norte, Reus, Santiago, Sevilla, Valencia y Gran Canaria) expect to have two agents each and 28 licenses. Moreover, this second phase includes the tender of the service to the Canary Island airports of La Gomera and El Hierro, which will have one license.
The four companies mentioned above have also presented bids in the first phase of the tender, where the licenses for 22 smaller airports are up for grabs, in addition to the freight services in the Zaragoza and Vitoria airports. In addition to the four companies mentioned above, Aena has received propositions for the first phase from Clece (ACS)/Thaler, Swissport, Lesma, World Wide Flight Services, Wisag Aviation Service GMBH&COKG and Aviapartner SAS.
Between the two phases, that will be resolved at the same time, estimated for spring 2015, 50 ramp handling licenses (luggage, runway operations, freight, mail and deicing) will be tendered to facilitate the services in 43 airports for seven years. Ground assistance services in Spain move around 830 million Euros a year, of which 540 million correspond to ramp handling services, and give jobs to more than 18,000 people.
Globalia bids through its division Groundforce for licenses in 39 airports with the objective of increasing its market share in the sector. It is the second largest operator in Spain. Globalia is present in 20 airports and provides its service to third parties in seven of the most important including Madrid and Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Iberia competes through its division Iberia Airport Services. It has prepared for the tender by acquiring new equipment valued at 2.5 million Euros, which has helped its effort to renew its vehicle pool and incorporate more advanced methods.
Menzies, the second biggest company worldwide in handling and present in Spain for more than ten years, will bid for the management of the large Spanish airports through its subsidiary Menzies Aviation Iberica.
Iberia
According to TeInteresa, Iberia has presented the necessary documentation to opt for all the handling licenses in the Spanish airports.
Iberia points out that the deal reached with the ground unions has permitted it to present very competitive handling bids for all the tenders. The president of Iberia, Luis Gallego, hopes to renew the licenses in the greatest number of airports possible and to succeed assures that “we have worked on the best offers in terms of price, quality and guarantees”.
Groundforce
With regard to Groundforce, Negocios.com emphasizes that it has presented in the AENA registry the last 16 handling bids to opt for ground assistance service in many other Spanish airports. Groundforce, the airport handling division of the Globalia Group, including this offer now competes in 39 airports to gain concessions, after it bid for 22 other licenses in March not including the ramp service in Zaragoza.
“We are dedicated to increasing our market share in the sector –Carmen Lopez Pintor, general director of Globalia Handling, assures-. We are currently the second largest operator in Spain, with presence in 20 airports and services provided to third parties in seven of the most important including Madrid and Barcelona”.
Currently, Groundforce provides services to almost 300 airlines worldwide, with an annual volume of 300,000 operations. Moreover, it makes up the most important network of freight terminals in Spain, with a presence in more than 14 national airports.

At the end of the bidding period, Aena informed in a press release of the offers presented for each of the licenses. In this second phase, for each airport, these are the companies that have bid:
